What is Trailer Registration?

Trailer and caravan registration is the process of getting your trailer or caravan registered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) so it can be used on public roads.

Without registration, your trailer or caravan cannot be driven, sold, or transferred legally in Queensland. All trailers and caravans in must be registered before use on Queensland roads.

Light trailers with an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) up to and including 750kg may be registered in Queensland by the owner completing a vehicle details form – contact your nearest Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre for more information.

Light trailers and caravans with an ATM ofΒ  751kg to 4500kg require a Safety Certificate inspection in order for the registration to be transferred from a seller to a buyer.

If the trailer is unregistered or is registered in another state in Australia, it will also require a HVRAS inspection in addition to a Safety Certificate inspection.

DD Roadworthies are able to perform Safety Certificate Inspections and HVRAS inspections for your convenience, contact us today to make a booking!

Why Do You Need Trailer Registration?

In Queensland, it’s a legal requirement for every trailer to be registered before it can be used on public roads.

  • First-time Registration: Brand-new or previously unregistered trailer.

  • Transferring Ownership: When buying or selling a trailer.

  • Registering an Interstate Trailer: Trailer is being brought into Queensland.

Without proper registration, trailers cannot be legally used, sold, or transferred. It’s an essential step to ensure your trailer is safe, compliant, and road-ready.
